Convert PDF Tables to an Excel Workbook

or drop files here

Stop retyping figures from a PDF. Tables come out as rows and columns with amounts Excel can calculate on, and the whole conversion happens inside this browser tab.

How it works

From locked PDF to working spreadsheet.

Drop in the PDF

Any PDF with tables in it works: an exported report, a supplier price list, a scanned statement. An encrypted file asks for its password before anything is read.

Decide how the sheets look

Mirror the document page by page, or gather every table onto a single sheet. Limit the pages if only one section matters, and choose the OCR language for scans.

Check the preview, then save

The first rows of the first table appear right in the result card, so you can confirm the columns lined up before opening the .xlsx in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.

Use cases

Numbers that were stuck in a PDF.

A PDF is built for reading and printing. The moment you want to total, sort or reuse its figures, you need them in cells.

Reconciling a bank statement

Banks hand out PDFs, accounting software wants rows. Pull the transaction table into a sheet and match it against your ledger with a lookup instead of by eye.

Analysing a published report

Annual reports and government statistics bury their numbers in borderless tables. Bring them across as real figures and chart them, or compare two years side by side.

Updating supplier price lists

Load a vendor catalogue into a sheet, add your margin in the next column and fill it down. Part numbers with leading zeros stay intact for your stock system.

Totalling invoices for tax time

Convert each invoice with all tables on one sheet, paste the line items together and sum the VAT or GST column without retyping a single amount.

Digitising an old paper ledger

A scanned register or stock count has no text inside it at all. OCR reads the page on your device first, then the table finder turns the recognised words into rows.

Grading and research data

Mark sheets exported as PDF, timetables, lab results tables in a paper: get them into rows and columns so you can sort, filter and calculate averages in seconds.

How a table is found, and what to double-check.

A PDF does not actually contain tables. It contains pieces of text placed at coordinates, plus lines drawn on the page. The converter rebuilds the grid from those two clues. Where border lines meet in a grid, that is a ruled table: the lines give the exact rows and columns, so a description that wraps onto three lines inside one cell stays in that one cell.

Without lines, it looks for a borderless table: a run of rows that each break into separate chunks of text, with columns taken from the vertical strips of empty space that no row crosses. A short line tucked tight under a row, with its first column empty, is read as wrapped text and merged back up into that row.

Pages that were turned in a viewer are read in the direction their text was written, so a sideways landscape table still comes out with rows as rows. Text that is itself set at an angle, such as a rotated column heading, is skipped.

Before you rely on the workbook, check three things: that a heading spanning two columns landed where you expect, that a table split across pages was joined correctly, and, for scans, that the column totals match the printed ones.

What lands in the cell

Currency signs are recognised but not displayed, so add a currency format to the column if you need one. Decimal values show two places while the cell keeps the full precision. Header rows, such as a row of years, stay as text so they never end up inside a total.

Common questions

Questions answered.

Will the numbers add up in Excel, or are they stored as text?
Figures are written as true numeric cells, so SUM, AVERAGE and pivot tables work on them straight away. Thousands separators, decimals, percentages and accounting negatives such as (1,234) are all recognised and given a matching number format. The first row of each table is treated as its header and kept as bold text.
Why did an account number keep its leading zeros?
A value like 00742 is almost always an identifier, such as a postcode, an employee ID or an account number, rather than a quantity. The converter leaves anything that starts with a zero (and has no decimal point) as text, so Excel does not quietly strip the zeros and break your lookups.
My PDF table has no border lines. Can it still be found?
Yes. Bank statements and annual reports often use whitespace instead of lines, so the converter also looks for rows that split into several pieces of text and works out the columns from the vertical gaps that no row crosses. It needs at least three such rows in a run before it calls something a table, which keeps ordinary paragraphs out.
Can it convert a scanned PDF to Excel?
Yes, with "Read scanned pages with OCR" switched on. Pages that are pictures of text are rendered at 300 DPI and read by Tesseract inside your browser, in one of nine languages, and the same table detection then runs on the recognised words. In columns that are mostly numbers, typical misreads like a bracket in place of a 1 or a letter O in place of a zero are corrected automatically, but you should still compare the totals with the original.
Should I pick one sheet per page or all tables on one sheet?
One sheet per page mirrors the document, which is handy when you need to find where a figure came from, and it can bring the surrounding text along too. All tables on one sheet stacks every table in a single column of blocks, each labelled with its page and table number, which is the quicker layout for sorting, filtering or copying into a model.
A table runs across two pages. What happens?
Each page is read on its own, so a table that continues onto the next page comes out as two tables, the second one starting with whatever row sits at the top of that page. On the single-sheet layout they appear one after the other, which makes it a quick job to delete the repeated header and join them.
Does it keep merged cells, colours and fonts?
No. The goal is clean, calculable data, so the workbook holds values, number formats, bold header rows and column widths sized to the content. Cell shading, borders and merged header cells from the PDF are not recreated; text from a merged cell lands in one column.
Is a confidential statement safe to convert here?
The PDF is opened by pdf.js inside this browser tab, the tables are worked out by code running on your machine, and the .xlsx file is assembled locally before you save it. No part of the document is sent to us or to any other server, which is why it is fine for payslips, ledgers and client statements.
